Overview
Metadata Capture (MDC) connects with Luxembourg's Open Data platform—data.public.lu↗—enabling you to automatically import your organisation's Open Data dataset records from data.public.lu into your MDC catalogue. This allows all of your organisation's dataset records—those added directly in MDC and those created on data.public.lu—to be published together on letzdata.lu↗, without the need to adjust your existing data.public.lu publication processes.
Only Catalogue Managers and Inventory Coordinators can perform actions related to Open Data dataset records.
How it works:
-
Link your organisation: You start by linking MDC with your organisation's account on the Open Data platform. MDC automatically finds your corresponding organisation(s) to link with. If your organisation is part of a parent or group entity, you can link with multiple organisations.
-
Automated import: Once linked, MDC imports dataset records from data.public.lu that were published by your linked organisation(s). This automated import happens daily. In MDC, newly imported records become candidates with a Pending status for review.
-
Candidate review: Once imported, you can Publish, Reject, or Delete candidate records. This step ensures you maintain control over the dataset records published in your MDC catalogue. Published Open Data dataset records appear on letzdata.lu↗ alongside records added directly in MDC.
-
Ongoing synchronisation: After you publish a candidate, MDC continues to sync with the source on data.public.lu. If the source record is updated, MDC automatically updates your published record on the next sync. If the source record is deleted, MDC deprecates it.
-
Read-only access: Published Open Data dataset records are read-only in MDC. You cannot edit them directly in MDC, duplicate them, or version them. If you need to make changes, you must edit them on data.public.lu and the changes will be reflected in your MDC catalogue on the next sync.
The Open Data dataset record lifecycle
The following diagram describes the lifecycle of Open Data dataset records in MDC.
Open Data dataset records skip the initial stages of the standard lifecycle (Draft, Completed, Validated, and Approved). Once imported, they obtain a Pending status and are only visible in the Open Data Dataset Review page. Once you publish them, they obtain a Published status and become visible in your dataset panel and on letzdata.lu↗.
Automated updates
MDC automatically synchronises with data.public.lu↗ daily to import new records and update existing ones.
The schedule for the daily sync is managed at the platform level and may change. For more information on the current schedule, contact your Catalogue Manager or system administrator.
Candidate statuses
The following table provides a quick reference of the statuses of Open Data dataset records:
| Status | Description | Available actions |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Imported and awaiting review. This is the initial status for all newly imported Open Data dataset records. | Publish, reject, or delete |
| Published | Published to your MDC catalogue and letzdata.lu↗. Appears in the Published tab of your dataset panel and continues to sync with data.public.lu↗ daily. | View only (automatically updated or deprecated based on source changes) |
| Rejected | Rejected from publication but remains in the Open Data Dataset Review page in MDC. | Republish or delete |
